Standing the Watch
Every service has a version of the same tradition: the watch. Someone stays awake so the rest can sleep. Someone keeps the log so the rest can forget the details and trust that they were written down. The duty rotates, but it never lapses. That tradition is the reason this site exists, and the reason this blog carries its name.
myvets.us is a tribute and an archive — a place built to honor every American who wore the uniform, in every branch, in every era. Not the famous ones only, and not any one war's generation. The site's job is simple to state and slow to finish: hold the record with respect, keep it legible, and keep it available.
This blog, THE WATCH, is the working log alongside that archive. Here is what it will carry:
- Notes on preservation. How service history gets kept — and how it gets lost. Paper, records, photographs, and the quiet ways a family's documentation disappears one move at a time.
- Pointers to the public record. The legitimate, official places where service records and unit histories actually live: the Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Archives, the branch history offices. What each one holds, and how to approach it.
- Updates from the archive. As the main site grows, changes worth noting will be logged here, plainly.
Just as important is what this blog will not do. It will not invent stories. There are no composite veterans here, no dramatized accounts, no borrowed valor of any kind. It will not publish anyone's personal information. And it will not hand out benefits, legal, or medical advice — those questions belong with the official sources, and every post that touches records or benefits will say so and point there. The rule of the house is the archivist's rule: record what is true, cite where it lives, and add nothing.
That restraint is not a limitation. It is the point. A tribute site earns its keep by being trustworthy, and trust is built the same way a watch is stood — steadily, without embellishment, one entry at a time.
The log is open. New dispatches will post as there is something worth posting, which is a slower and better standard than a schedule.
In the meantime, the main site is where the substance lives. Go see it: myvets.us. The watch is stood so the record endures. That is the whole mission, and it is enough.
